The Global Diaspora Assembly hears from representatives around the world

December 2022

Global Diaspora Week 2022 was hosted by the Global Diaspora Confederation to help deliver on the potential the diaspora movement offers to our planet. The conferences bought together diaspora organisations from around the world and facilitated discussion on how best to collaborate.

As chair of Scotland's business diaspora organisation Scottish Business Network, Russell Dalgleish was honoured to participate throughout the week, speaking on the 13th with a focus on Europe and sharing his findings and key takeaways at the Global Assembly on the 17th. The conference was an inclusive and diverse event with speakers from many, many countries around the world and as such Russell was delighted to represent Scotland. In this LinkedIn post, Russell gives thanks and invites you to join the conversation: Russell Dalgleish - LinkedIn - Diaspora Movement

Today we recognize the contribution and challenges faced by migrants in our societies.

By Russell Dalgleish

Are you defined as a migrant?

Did migration play a part in your family's story?

Are you working with those who have travelled so far, and suffered so much hardship to find safety, opportunity, and a new life? If this is you then please accept our thanks for your efforts.

Today as we gather to participate in the 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 we will recognize the contribution made by migrants to our societies and the challenges they are forced to overcome.

Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General of IOM - UN Migration, the International Organization for Migration part of the United Nations will be the guest of honour today.

We will also be joined by Diaspora Organizations, stakeholders, partners, and supporters as we close out this year's Global Diaspora Week led by the Global Diaspora Confederation.

Other speakers include Peter Kwok, Mirana Rajoharison, Mandy Preville-Findlay, Juan Carlos Viloria Doria, Martin Russell, Georgemay Figaro, Ema Tora Vueti, Maria Catalina Moisescu, Paddy Siyanga Knudsen.

It has been a privilege for me to participate this week in various discussions where global experts have discussed the optimum approach to use the Diaspora movement as a tool for good in our world. How best we can foster collaboration, learn from each other and support fledging organizations to become established?

With the support of Scots at home and across the world we have been able to establish Scottish Business Network as a recognised member of the Diaspora movement and I must thank all who have helped us on this journey.

If you are not aware of the benefits of utilising your diaspora, then I would urge you to reach out and I will be delighted to share my own experience with you.

One thing I have learned this week from speaking with participants from across the world is that diaspora is a movement for good and open to all.
