Russell speaks virtually at the United Nations in New York on MSME Day

June 2022

Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSME) Day 2022

MSME Day was designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of the crucial role of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year it fell on 27th June 2022 with the theme of “Resilience and Rebuilding: MSMEs for sustainable development at the forefront of building back better and stronger from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis and conflicts".

The hybrid conference focused on how purpose-driven MSMEs and social entrepreneurship are integral to inclusive recovery and growth and to combating inequality. The panel discussions saw women and youth-led start-ups as well as global leaders highlight the gaps, progress and challenges that entrepreneurs continue to encounter and how we can better support and assist them to flourish.

MSME Day 2022 was jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of Argentina to the United Nations, DESA, UNCTAD, ILO, ITC, UNIDO and the International Council for Small Business (ICSB).

As Founding Chair of the Scottish Business Network and Founding Director of the Net Zero Nation, Russell Dalgleish was honoured to share his experience in utilising a global network to support smaller companies achieve international success.

“I had the unique experience of speaking via Zoom at the United Nations in New York on the subject of how the diaspora can support the business community. I was truly humbled by the experience and must admit to being more nervous than I typically am on a zoom call as I felt the responsibility to not only represent our organisation but also as a representative of my nation.” - Russell Dalgleish

Russell would also like to share his gratitude to all those who have supported SBN’s mission…

“The invitation to speak to a global audience was recognition of the high regarding Scottish Business Network is viewed today. The organisation Christine Esson and I had the privilege to launch those few years ago is now viewed as an exemplar of best practice in the sector. The reason for the success achieved by SBN is solely down to those who freely give their time to support our goal. I would ask our members, ambassadors, advisors, partners and friends to accept my deep thanks for their efforts.”

With MSMEs accounting for 90% of businesses, 60-70% of employment and 50% of GDP worldwide, the insights from this year’s fifth anniversary event is of significant importance to us all.
